A MIDWIFE who hated the way she looked has had £45,000 of plastic surgery in a controversial reality TV show.

Janet Higgins, from Kirkby, went on Living TV show Extreme Makeover to have six weeks of cosmetic enhancements.

In the episode, which will be shown this Thursday, the 42-year-old has a gum lift, veneers on her teeth, a brow lift, an upper and lower eyelid lift, a breast enlargement and Botox injections.
Janet was one of 20 people chosen to go on the reality TV show, which originated in America.
The programme's producers received 16,000 applications from people who wanted to change the way they looked.

For nearly 10 years, Ms Higgins had devoted her time to raising her boys and working as a midwife, leaving her little time to herself. She got divorced nine years ago when her sons Matthew and Connor were aged five and nine.

She lacked confidence in her appearance and felt she looked boyish and the frown lines on her face prompted everyone to tell her to cheer up and stop being miserable.

Ms Higgins had very droopy eyes which made her look permanently tired.

She said: "My ex husband's family used to call me 'no bits' and I've always felt like I had a boy's figure.

"I never felt feminine and my frown made me look angry and older."
Each participant is shown before, after and during surgery.

A team of plastic surgeons, cosmetic dentists, hair and make up artists, stylists and personal trainers worked on the midwife.

In each of the episodes, two participants are followed throughout their transformations, while viewers are given tips from experts on health, fashion and beauty.

Ms Higgins said she recovered quickly from the surgery. She added: "I had no pain and very little bruising.

"Everyone was astonished at how quickly I was up and about.
"My family was amazed when the new me came out. They all said I looked beautiful.
"Now that my life has settled down, I feel so much better. I used to wear black and dark brown."

The programme, which began on January 10, has attracted controversy in this country.
Sir Bob Geldof was reportedly furious with his 15-year-old daughter Peaches after she went to a Botox party for the show's launch.

The invitation said: "We invite you to be pampered and made over, try the latest innovative beauty treatments and even sample Botox."

Last year Norman Waterhouse, president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, said such programmes meant more people were having cosmetic surgery for the wrong reasons.

Many of these people, including the nurse at right, contended with the waves near their source, along the coast of Chile. Others faced the tsunami many hours later in Hawaii and Japan. Most of the interviews were done decades later in the 1980’s and 1990’s.

The stories provide a mixed bag of lessons about tsunami survival. Some illustrate actions that reliably saved lives-heeding natural warnings, abandoning belongings, and going promptly to high ground and staying there until the tsunami is really over. Others describe taking refuge in buildings or trees or floating on debris-tactics that had mixed results and can be recommended only as desperate acts.

Breast Enlargement Contest Draws Fire

TAMPA, Fla. - Radio giant Clear Channel Communications has come under fire from women's health advocates over a Christmas contest in which stations granted breast enlargement surgeries to women in four cities.

In the "Breast Christmas Ever" contest, 13 women were awarded the procedure after writing essays to the stations explaining why they wanted larger breasts. A Tampa station claimed to receive more than 91,000 entries.

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 29 (HealthDayNews) -- Cosmetic breast augmentation should be restricted to women aged 18 and older, says a new policy adopted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

The new policy is in response to recent media reports about teenage girls seeking purely cosmetic breast enlargement. The policy is consistent with the U.S. Food and Drug

Administration's rules regarding saline-filled breast implants for women at least 18 years old.
"Contrary to popular belief, people 18 and younger make up only 4 percent of all cosmetic plastic surgery procedures. Although the numbers have increased over the years, teens continue to be a small percentage of the plastic surgery population," ASPS President Dr. Scott Spear said in a prepared statement.

"Nevertheless, the ASPS leadership felt a responsibility to more than just quietly comply with the FDA. We want our members and the public to see how strongly we feel about teenage cosmetic breast augmentation," Spear said.

The policy outlines various abnormalities that may require breast augmentation such as trauma, disease and inherited problems. The policy requires plastic surgeons to determine if potential patients are emotionally and physically mature enough to have the surgery.

Patients also have to understand potential risks and complications and have realistic expectations about the outcome.

Navy Funds Breast Surgery

LONDON: The British Navy has spent thousands paying for a male sailor to have a breast reduction, it was revealed yesterday.

Despite huge cuts on defence spending, military bosses agreed for the ordinary seaman to undergo the $6500 procedure.The 102kg sailor, who works in the logistics section of the warship HMS Albion, had excess flesh and skin removed from his chest after losing weight.

It was also revealed that one of his female colleagues had a breast enlargement operation paid for by the Royal Navy.

If all you really want for Christmas is an aqualine nose, enhanced breasts or flawless skin then a voucher for a package holiday complete with plastic surgery will hit the spot.

The idea of heading to luscious travel destinations in Southeast Asia for a beautiful holiday and a cosmetic procedure or two is not so new. But doing it with minimal risk is.

Louise Cogan began Gorgeous Getaways after she heard about the trend for women to head to Southeast Asia for cheaper plastic surgery.

She became concerned that the women were picking surgeons off the internet with no real knowledge of what they were getting. Many were not getting what they wanted or getting sick as a result.

"And I thought well what about an Australian company providing complete care and complete support while they were over there," Cogan told Breakfast.

The Australian based travel agency specialises in plastic surgery tours to Malaysia where clients get cut price body enhancing procedures and recover in five star luxury.

The public have taken up the concept pretty quickly.

Cogan set up the company website earlier this year and without any marketing, promotion or advertising they have sent 50 clients to malaysia for surgery so far in 2004.

Package surgery holidays are not just an Australian phenomena. Nearly 40% of Gorgeous Getaways market is from New Zealand.

"We market to the whole world including the UK and the US, so we do get people from all around the world," Cogan says. "In New Zealand the take up has just been incredible. I just put that down to them being adventurous and their willingness to try new things."

Cogan doesn't believe the interest is a reflection of the standard of surgery in New Zealand.

"It's a different product, it's a different package," Cogan says. "It's just simply because people want the five star holiday as well and they want a couple of treatments they just couldn't afford over here."

The cost of the packages varies depending on what the client wants to change.

"You've got the young girls going over just for a breast enlargement and the older ladies who are going over for two or three procedures," Cogan says. "It can be up to $15,000 to $20,000."

Ten years ago package holidays to beautiful places to surgically enhance how we look would have been a shocking idea. But in today's society, while the concept is still a little amusing - and worthy of a news story - it is largely accepted.

"It's so commonplace now, it's so talked about it and so many people have had it (plastic surgery). People talk about it openly and freely now and it's not hushed up,"

Cogan visited both Malaysia and Thailand when she was choosing a destination, but unlike most travel agents she assessed hospitals and doctors rather than resorts and restaurants. Malaysia was her number one choice for the surgery due to the excellent standards and experience of the surgeons.

Following surgery people visit either Penang or Langkawi for a two to three week recovery holiday in five star style. Managers and nurses check up on the clients regularly during their time away and a final check up is carried out before clients head home.

For those who don't want to go to Asia for the surgery but still want to get away from home, the company also offers trips to Cairns.

Every possible procedure you can think of is on offer from the standard breast enlargement and facelift through to dental procedures such as crowns and implants and it is not just people purchasing holidays for themselves.

Husbands and boyfriends are buying the plastic surgery holidays for wives and girlfriends - couples have also been taking holidays together.

Gorgeous Getaways had so many men buying packages for their partners that they began offering gift vouchers.

So much for the one you love, loving and accepting you for who you are!

Cogan says in her experience it is the woman's decision to opt for the surgery and the partner is acting on her wishes.

But maybe for the sake of personal safety it would be best to steer clear of those particular gift vouchers unless they are specifically asked for.

The repercussions could be far worse than hesitating before responding to a partner asking if she looks fat in whatever she's wearing.

Breast implant may not fulfill your wish for perfect breast size. And you should not expect 100% perfection from implants as there are numerous factors affecting the outcomes of the implant surgery. These factors include your existing breasts, age, skin texture and your health condition.

Furthermore, you should always remember every surgical operation carries risks. And it is important that you are aware of the potential risks and consequences of breast implant before you make the decision.

Breast Implant Risk 1 - Capsular Constracture This is the most common complication with breast implants. It happens when the scar tissue forms round the implant shrinks and harden the breasts. Surgical procedure like removal of the implants and capsule, and replacement of another implant may have to be done.

Breast Implant Risk 2 - Implants leakage Do not expect breast implants to last for a lifetime. However, implants make taking and reading mammograms more difficult and may delay or hinder the early detection of breast cancer. Special care and extra time are required for mammography for woman with implants.
Breast Implant Risk 8 - Additional Surgeries Because of the problems associated with breast implants, you may need to undergo surgeries either to remove or replace the implants. Should replacement of implants is not done, the breasts shape may not be cosmetically desirable.
